Chocolate mouse

Rosemary's Baby

“Chocolate mouse” is Guy Woodhouse’s teasing name for Minnie Castevet’s chocolate mousse, a domestic joke that becomes a clue to Rosemary Woodhouse’s drugged helplessness. The phrase first plays as a light pun; in Rosemary’s dream, Minnie’s explanation gives the dessert a darker significance, linking its consumption to Rosemary’s inability to perceive what is being done to her.

The Name and the Dessert

Minnie brings over two white custard cups of mousse after Guy says the couple does not need the extra food she has offered. He presents them as dessert, calling the dish mousse au chocolat and repeating the comic alternative, “chocolate mouse,” which he attributes to Minnie. The joke depends on the sound of “mousse” turning the dessert into a mouse, and Guy extends it by warning that, with Minnie, it could actually be mouse. Rosemary laughs, saying the dessert is what she had planned to make herself.

Rosemary initially treats Minnie’s gesture as kind and cautions Guy against making fun of her. The joking name therefore belongs to an intimate, ordinary exchange at the dinner table, even as it makes the food seem faintly suspect. Guy says Minnie only wanted them to try one of her specialties, keeping the dessert within the couple’s familiar neighborly routine.

Taste and Pressure to Eat

The mousse tastes excellent to Rosemary, but she detects a chalky undertaste that recalls blackboards and grade school. Guy cannot detect it. After two spoonfuls, Rosemary puts her spoon down; Guy dismisses the aftertaste and urges her to finish, arguing that Minnie worked hard to prepare it. The difference in their responses makes the meal more than a shared dessert: Rosemary registers something troubling in its taste, while Guy treats her reluctance as silly and presses her to continue.

The Dream’s Revelation

In the later dream sequence, Minnie explains that because Rosemary ate the “mouse,” she cannot see or hear and is like someone dead. The phrase’s earlier joke is thereby recast as a clue: the dessert is associated with Rosemary’s impaired awareness during the assault depicted in the dream. What had sounded like a whimsical mispronunciation becomes a compact, disturbing explanation of her vulnerability, joining the meal’s ordinary setting to the dream’s revelation of deliberate incapacitation.
